5 methods to choose and combine fonts for your brand design

If you are wondering which one is your favourite, here is a side by side comparison of the three most popular graphic design apps:

Canva, Illustrator or Photoshop?

But for the purpose of this exercise, open any programme that allows you to work with your favourite fonts.

There is a lot of ideas and theories on the subject of combining fonts (just google "how to combine fonts"), but don't be fooled - yes, there are some rules, but this is by no means a science. There is a huge element of personal esthetics, gut feeling, and star alignment.

The best you can do is to do your own research, find out what you like and figure out how it's been done. Remember the three steps of DIYing anything you want?

The one universal rule you can apply to anything you do is

start simple.

So in this case, start with one font and then look for a second. Add a third as you go, if you need to.

OK, let's see how my five simple methods can help you choose and combine fonts for your brand.

HOW TO CHOOSE AND COMBINE FONTS

Pick one font you really like and start looking for its perfect match.

1. Diversify the gene pool

Don't combine two fonts that look or feel too similar. If you can't tell them apart, or if they have both a distinctly edgy characters, they are probably not a good match. Fonts from the same family might be OK, but that's another story for another time.

2. Use the statement necklace method

Pick one distinctive, quirky font and combine it with a plain dress, I mean font, that sets the perfect canvas for your statement piece.

3. Send your fonts on speed dating

Test, experiment and try different options as quickly as possible and listen to your gut. Which brings me to method number 4.

4. Trust your gut feeling

If something doesn't feel right, it probably doesn't look right either. Keep looking.

5. Let the dough rise

Look at your design a couple of hours or even days later and you'll know right away what works and what doesn't.
